Aug. 1st, 2009 04:00 pmI collected several of Asaji Saki's photobooks while I was in Japan. While I don't have a scanner that works, I still wanted to share some of these photos with the world, so I resorted to that old technique of the desperate: digital photos.

Summary: During the Bafuku period, Princess Kazu, half-sister of Emperor Koumei, is sent - to her distress - to marry the young Shogun, Iemochi Tokugawa. She is accompanied by Hashimoto Saneyana, a childhood friend of Kazu and the envoy of the Emperor, who is as grieved as she by the decision. It is expected to unite the two houses as the Tokugawa power wanes, but with Iemochi's death, matters change. Hashimoto is reunited with her during the surrender of Edo Castle.

Summary: In 1900s Argentina, Nicholas - a former extremist leader - is released from prison after 7 years of incarceration. He finds a new position in a tango-bar and reunites with some of his old compatriots, although his old lover has now moved on.
He agreed to help Isabella, a promising tango dancer, but the lifestyle of his old friends means that things don't remain comfortable and peaceful for long.

Review: Epiphany - Hoshigumi 1999
Jun. 10th, 2009 09:10 pmSummary: Loosely based on the comedy of errors that is Twelfth Night, Epiphany is a piece of meta-comedy-drama, which looks back at the roots of co-ed theatre in Japan, from the heart of the kabuki tradition.
Set in Meiji-era Japan, the story follows Raikoya Otoka who, when her brother runs away from his familial responsibilities and the opportunity to join the Enoza kabuki theatre, decides to take his place until his return.
With all the confusion, Otaka finds herself in a muddle of a love-triangle with Iriya, master of the Enouza, who is in love with his former tutor's daughter, Mari, who in turn falls in love with the person everyone assumes is Takagoro.
There is also the subplot of Mari's father's love affair in Europe, the influence that still has on him and the way it changes Japanese theatre. There is a more detailed summary here.
