Summary: Several years before she became Top Star, Asaji Saki hosted the Hello Beautiful Night dinner show.
Another of the videos I bought in bulk, because they featured Saki, this show really does seem to be her 'and now, auditioning for Top Star' show, letting her show off various talents, most particularly her acting. She is also supported by Mimi Anri, Marisa Hitomi, Ryou Akino and Oka Kazumi.
There's my summary and song list on the TakaWiki, so I'll just highlight some of my favourite parts.
- Because I love you was lovely and utterly devastating. I have no idea what the lyrics are, but Saki acted as if someone had just torn her heart out and was playing football with it. Trouble is, when she acts sad, I flail and get sad too. This was going through a list: "Top Star Requirement - Acting".
- during Desperado, there was a rather nice, but unfortunately short dance sequence. It was very dark and intense, almost like a tango, but not quite, between Saki and Ryou Akino. I may have to dig out my Cosmos Ephemeral Love to see what she was like in that as well.
- The piano-playing. I might have squeed a bit when she sat down at the grand piano and started to play. I recognised the melody, but can't for the life of me place what it is, and since I'm hopeless at kanji, I'm probably fated never to know, but it was lovely and she seemed so at ease playing it. (And there's that list again: "Top Star Requirement - Musical ability")
- Winner Takes it All, as sung by a bouncing, beaming, utterly giddy Japanese lady in a purple sequinned jumpsuit has to be one of the happiest sights in all the world.
There's some very spiffy dance numbers by both Saki and the Musumeyaku backup, and when they do the livelier songs, you can tell they're having a great time. On the whole, it's a very nice show, but I'm afraid that Now's the Season still just pips it to the post, because of the crack ;)
