masahiI have too much time on my hands and finally got around to doing that epic, epic meme of 100 questions:

I mostly go by Fyre online. I'm heading towards 30, which is a rather scary thought, and I'm into my 4th year of being a Takarazuka fan.

What was the performance that first addicted you?
I was caught from the first glimpse of the Elisabeth clips. I didn't know what it was, but having been a musicals fan since I was a kid, I knew a good performance and great performers when I saw them :)

Who is the "first love" that lead you to becoming a Takarazuka fan?
Asaji Saki caught and held my interest, which is why I have all but 1-2 of her available shows on video :)
5 観劇は大劇場メインですか？東宝劇場メインですか？
Do you mainly go to see shows at the Daigekijou or the Tokyo Gekijou?
I've only been to Japan once, but did two shows at Daigekijou and one in Tokyo Gekijou. I prefer Daigekijou. Tokyo's is very much a Tokyo-theatre. The Daigekijou is much more welcoming and has so much to see.

I'm very fond of Yuzuki Reon, but Nagina Ruumi is leapfrogging the ranks by being such an angel.

Two of my favourites just left - Mizuse Chiaki for health reasons and Shirosaki Ai retired. Now, my remaining favourite is Yumesaki Nene :)

Which, of the performances you've seen so far, was one that you thought "I absolutely must get tickets for this!"
Tsukigumi Elisabeth - my entire trip to Japan was based on getting to see that show.

Outside of the one you favor [ie - patronage], which seito are you most interested in right now?
There are a lot of these: people who I spotted out of the corner of my eye and couldn't stop watching, people who steal the show entirely. And Yuu of course. Yuu is wonderful.

Of the ones on their way to the top, so to speak, which seito do you like? More than one is okay.

Misa Noeru, Hoshihara Misao, Natsumi You, Ema Naoki.

I'm not sure on this one.
15 宝塚ファンとしての自分の長所と短所をあげてください。
Please tell us your strong point and weak point as a Takarazuka fan.
My strong point is that I don't criticise the performers that I don't follow. I like to see how the shows work as a whole, and I like taking in troupe dynamics and performances.
My weak point is being stuck on the other side of the world and not being able to show my support as much as I would like.

What's your greatest boast as a Takarazuka fan?
Meeting Nagina Ruumi. It was a shock and incredible and she spoke to us first, rather than the fanclub speaking to us on her behalf. Plus, she sent me an autograph. It never stops making me happy :)

What's your greatest confession as a Takarazuka fan? Feel free to elaborate.
I don't find TakaHana as wonderful as everyone made out and much prefered O-Hana with Zunko.
18 再演してほしい芝居はありますか？
Is there a musical you wish they would put on again?
Epiphany. I would love to see that again.

Is there a revue show you wish they would put on again?
Not especially. Most revues are fantastic crack anyway :)
20 あなたがファンになる生徒さんの傾向を分析してみてください。
Please try and analyze the kind of seito you're inclined to become a fan of.
I especially like all-around performers, with a side of dork. Kacha wasn't on my radar for a long time, because she barely got anything major to do, and then she was thrown as us as Elisabeth and she broke my heart over and over, and I was smitten. Then I saw a video of her dorking about with a photographer and was smitten.

Who do you think is currently best suited to a black tailcoat?
Any of them? Really, I want their tailors.

Do you ever actually use the words "lead otokoyaku"?
Not really. Top otoko is my usual.
23 轟悠さんについて何かコメントを。
Some comments on Todoroki Yuu.
Meh. She can sing and she can dance and she can act. She can be electrifying, but only when she wants to. Nishiki-e of the Winds is a good example - she was dancing and singing up a storm, but for a lot of it, it was like she was sleepwalking it.
24 路線男役の条件って何でしょうね？
What do you think are requirements for an otokoyaku on her way to the top?
Having at least two of the singing/dancing/acting combi - Mariko could dance/act, Touko could sing/act. A combination of all three is great, but there has to be that twinkle in the eye, and the willpower to not only manage one's own performance, but to guide and lead the troupe around you. Top Stars have to be able to do everything, and they need to have an iron will to do so.

What do you think are requirements for a musumeyaku on her way to the top?
Similarly to otokoyaku, there has to be will there, and the ability to help the top otokoyaku lead. Look at what happened to Tsukigumi after Mihoko left - Asako was left to shoulder the whole burden herself and she needed help.
26 朝海ひかるさんはどうですか？
What do you think of Matobu Sei?
I looooooooooooove her. Her Bill in MiiMai was wonderful and funny and witty, then suddenly turned and broke my heart completely. Plus, her singing was incredible, which surprised me. I don't know why it should, but her voice was so much bigger than I expected.
27 タカハナコンビはどうですか？
What do you think of the Touko-Asuka combination?
They were lovely together, with wonderful chemistry and voices that blended really beautifully.

Well then, what about the Mizu-Tonami combination?
Tonami is the kind of Musumeyaku I adore. She had fire and energy and bounce and a touch of the naughty which perfectly worked against Mizu's sometimes crazy-intensity. They were great together.

What do you think is the coolest stage name?
I dunno. My Japanese isn't good enough to make out some of the more complicated ones.

Is there an OG whom you wish you could have seen when she was a current seito?
Asaji Saki is the main one, closely followed by Saeko.
31 「あのとき退団しなければ今頃は…」と思う生徒さんっていますよね？それは誰？
Is there someone you think: "They didn't retire last time, but this time..."? Who is it?
Mizu. I see her leaving by the end of 2010. If she doesn't, we'll be left with nothing more than her bones on the stage. Plus, she's set up her new career as a JRock star already.

Some comments on Sena Jun.
I love Asako. When she became Top, there was such warmth and character and charisma. I loved her chemistry with Tsukigumi, especially in shows like Rome at Dawn and Ernest. They had fun, and they loved it, but she was so tired by the beginning of last year that I just wanted her to retire so she could go, eat her fill, play with her dog and rest. I hope she'll be happier now :)

Tonami, all the way :) Her blog is sweet and funny.

Is there someone whose makeup from a certain performance you want? Who?
No one particularly. I don't like makeup. Plus, Takarazuka make-up looks absurd on me.
36 未来優希さんについて何かコメントを。
Some comments on Mirai Yuuki.
A lovely performer, who will be sadly missed when she retires in April. Good strong voice and character.
37 大空祐飛さんについて何かコメントを。
Some comments on Ozora Yuuhi.
She's come a huge distance since I first saw her as Prince Pouty in Elisabeth, when I first started collecting the shows. She's got so much charisma and charm now, plus, she managed to survive the wacky hijinks of her time spent with Hanagumi. The more I see, the more I like :)

Please tell us about a seito you think should be used more, but gets no recognition.
Hiromi. I adore her for being lovely and understated, but she really needs to get hauled back into the spotlight. She has the same charm her big sister had, and I suspect the only reason Saeko got half as much notice as she did was because Saki picked on her.

If I said "someone treasured by the company", who would you associate that with?
Yuuhi - given by the amount of shunting they did to get her into position to be a Top Star, someone up there likes her.

Who do you consider the best etoile?
Kimu in Zorro ;)
41 「歌えない」or「踊れない」or「芝居ができない」、この中で一番不利だと思うのは？
"She can't sing", "she can't dance", "she can't act", which do you consider the biggest handicap?
Acting. If someone can't act, then it comes across in their singing and dancing. You can get away without having perfect dancing (see Touko) or amazing singing (see Mariko), but if you can't act, all the lyrics in the world won't be enough to express what acting can express.

A wonderful singer and great character performer, who I really wish I'd seen more of before she retired.

3-4 seems a decent enough period, though 3 is probably kinder to upcoming underclassmen who have ambition ;)

The opening song from Zorro, the finale of Act 1 of Epiphany and the SHINSENGUMI HO! song from Spirit of the samurai, because it gets stuck in my head.

Some comments on Koike's works.
He's done some good shows, and I can forgive him a lot of things because he directed so many of the Elisabeth productions that I love.
55 「エリザベート」は何組バージョンが好きですか？
Which troupe's version of Elisabeth do you like?
All of them, but most of Tsukibeth 2009, because it was such a powerful version with so many layers of personal stuff affecting the performances. We saw it 3 days before Asako announced her retirement, and that atmosphere really added to the whole empire-falling-down thing.
56 宝塚に外部スタッフとして招きたい人がいたら教えてください。実現可能性は問いません。
Is there some staff from outside of Takarazuka that you'd like to work there? It doesn't matter how feasible it is.
*coughs* I would be secretly squeeful if ALW worked with them, because I'd love to see them do an over the top Lloyd Webber production. Phantom would be fantastic. Or just something like Joseph for a Bow Hall.

I would love them (or anyone, really) to do something with the life of Maximilian II of Austria. They like their Habsburgs. It could be possible.

Not to me, but then, I'm of a view that anyone can wear what/when/where they like as they please.

Hardly. We squee on mutual shows as much as possible. That's the good thing about not being Japan-based and always surrounded by other fans. You get used to squeeing on everyone.

Girls in tuxes that fit are hot. It's nothing to do with playing a boy. It's hot person + tux = superhot.

Clearly, by association they think that the Kabuki is a a gay disco, then :P (Mind you, the only show I saw at the Kabuki theatre featured a tall, handsome man in platforms and a purple velvet jumpsuit with glittery flames all over the crotch...)

They're an incredibly professional elite theatre company, who cater to both traditional and non-traditional fans, and most especially, they never underestimate the value of throwing glitter on everything.

Not that I recall. Unless it's a fangirly crush, in which case, I don't fancy them, but I squee myself silly about them.

Has your love for Takarazuka ever slanted your perceptions of men in your real life?
Ahahahaha. Hardly. It has, however, shifted my perception of gender equality and balance in Japan (like how it doesn't exist)

Have you ever had an instant as a fan where you thought: "I've gone past the point of no return?"
Nope, because to me, I don't regret throwing myself headlong into fandom :) Although since I reached a point of considering joining a fanclub... well, I think I'm there.

What kind of person is a "painful fan"?
The kind who always find something bad in every show/troupe. The ones who think they are the be-all-and-end-all of Zuka knowledge and look down on other people accordingly. Fortunately, they are very, very rare to run into, mostly because they don't interact with plebs like me :)

What do you think of men being Takarazuka fans?
It's great :D I saw more men in the Takarazuka theatres than I've ever seen in a musical in the UK, period. I think it's fantastic.

Please tell us your definition of an "old fan".
In the Japanese clubs, it sounds like the people who started following a Sienne from the day she sold them a violet ;) In the online, non-Japanese community, it seems like anyone who has been around for the length of a top star's run is there.
97 宝塚ファンとして絶対にしてはいけないことは何だと思いますか？
What do you think is something that Takarazuka fans must not do?
I would go with making the actresses uncomfortable. I have seen fans do some truly shameful and mortifying things to Broadway/London performers, and I would hate to see it happen to the Siennes too.

What would cause you to stop being a Takarazuka fan?
They do musicals. They entertain me. They make me smile. The day all of those things stop happening, I won't be a fan any longer.

I don't think I would, ever. Peer pressure and school systems like that terrify me. They may be good character builders, but no. Not ever.

It's an amazing spectacular rainbow of music and singing and dancing by people who work themselves to the bone to make sure they produce something magical. It's something that makes me smile, laugh, cry and I love it.

Some comments on Todoroki Yuu.
Meh. She can sing and she can dance and she can act. She can be electrifying, but only when she wants to. Nishiki-e of the Winds is a good example - she was dancing and singing up a storm, but for a lot of it, it was like she was sleepwalking it.

What do you think are requirements for an otokoyaku on her way to the top?
Having at least two of the singing/dancing/acting combi - Mariko could dance/act, Touko could sing/act. A combination of all three is great, but there has to be that twinkle in the eye, and the willpower to not only manage one's own performance, but to guide and lead the troupe around you. Top Stars have to be able to do everything, and they need to have an iron will to do so.

Similarly to otokoyaku, there has to be will there, and the ability to help the top otokoyaku lead. Look at what happened to Tsukigumi after Mihoko left - Asako was left to shoulder the whole burden herself and she needed help.

What do you think of Matobu Sei?
I looooooooooooove her. Her Bill in MiiMai was wonderful and funny and witty, then suddenly turned and broke my heart completely. Plus, her singing was incredible, which surprised me. I don't know why it should, but her voice was so much bigger than I expected.

Tonami is the kind of Musumeyaku I adore. She had fire and energy and bounce and a touch of the naughty which perfectly worked against Mizu's sometimes crazy-intensity. They were great together.

I love Asako. When she became Top, there was such warmth and character and charisma. I loved her chemistry with Tsukigumi, especially in shows like Rome at Dawn and Ernest. They had fun, and they loved it, but she was so tired by the beginning of last year that I just wanted her to retire so she could go, eat her fill, play with her dog and rest. I hope she'll be happier now :)

She's come a huge distance since I first saw her as Prince Pouty in Elisabeth, when I first started collecting the shows. She's got so much charisma and charm now, plus, she managed to survive the wacky hijinks of her time spent with Hanagumi. The more I see, the more I like :)

Hiromi. I adore her for being lovely and understated, but she really needs to get hauled back into the spotlight. She has the same charm her big sister had, and I suspect the only reason Saeko got half as much notice as she did was because Saki picked on her.

Acting. If someone can't act, then it comes across in their singing and dancing. You can get away without having perfect dancing (see Touko) or amazing singing (see Mariko), but if you can't act, all the lyrics in the world won't be enough to express what acting can express.

He's done some good shows, and I can forgive him a lot of things because he directed so many of the Elisabeth productions that I love.

All of them, but most of Tsukibeth 2009, because it was such a powerful version with so many layers of personal stuff affecting the performances. We saw it 3 days before Asako announced her retirement, and that atmosphere really added to the whole empire-falling-down thing.

I would go with making the actresses uncomfortable. I have seen fans do some truly shameful and mortifying things to Broadway/London performers, and I would hate to see it happen to the Siennes too.

They do musicals. They entertain me. They make me smile. The day all of those things stop happening, I won't be a fan any longer.

It's an amazing spectacular rainbow of music and singing and dancing by people who work themselves to the bone to make sure they produce something magical. It's something that makes me smile, laugh, cry and I love it.
