I'd definitely recommend watching the anime. It's so bitter and dark and delightful in some parts. Plus, much to my surprise, I ended up with a great big squee crush on Alain, who is simply wonderful. Plus, Oscar is hardcore ;) And it's actually surprisingly historically accurate.
